Originally these signs read (number) M-1 and
were introduced to help engineers to
properly platform trains at stations. These colors more then likely were
selected to
stand out as compared to previous black on white platform car mark signs.
The use of MU on car markers began during the late 90s/early 2000s and the
change was made in time for the introduction of the M7 cars during 2001.

Potentially any station in
diesel territory where the company wants to specifically designate a short
push-pull Train to stop so as to reduce the distance passengers have to
walk.
Ex. You have a 6 car
platform and majority of passengers wait on the east end, you don’t want to
platform a short 3 car train at the west end of the platform thus forcing
all Passengers to walk west and pack into the same car.
Having the car marker marks the load spot
official and relieves the engineer if he/she spots w/o the marker and leaves
a door hanging off. This would mean disciplinary actions taken on the crew.
